First Booster Draft

That could have gone far worse. I went into the draft figuring I'd force whatever shard, Grixis or Jund, gave me my first decent rare. Pack one I open Sedris, so guess what I went with? Too bad I opened Broodmate Dragon, Sprouting Thrinax, and Kresh during the second pack. I took 'em anyway.

I went 1-2. Better than last time.

Match 1: 2-0

Game 1: I legitimately kick ass. It's very close, and I feel very good about winning. Guy had a good Naya deck, but a Swerved Soul's Fire got me the game.

Game 2: Guy draws nothing, NOTHING, but land and Where Ancients Tread. I feel bad. He was visibily angry at his deck by the end of the game.

Match 2: 0-2

Again, both games were close, and both were ended by that damn Jhessian Infiltrator. Augh unblockable. Augh exalted. AUGH.

Match 3: 0-2

I wouldn't call this close, but it wasn't a bloodbath. I could have done worse. Kinda got mana screwed a little both times. Oh well. Did manage to Blightning away a Predator Dragon. That was nice.

All in all, I came away with some good cards. Got to trade for a second Boartusk Liege and my first Figure of Destiny; the guy was putting together a Cruel Comman deck, and I had the Cruel Ultimatums he needed, so I figured what the hell, make my Sligh deck better. I'm not going to shell out for the manabase I'd need anyway, so who cares. When I have a job, I'll start caring that much.

Picked up a couple Lorwyn packs after the draft. Didn't get a Cryptic Command like I'd hoped. (I'd figured, if my first Morningtide pack got me a Mutavault, why not?) I did pull a Purity, however. He's pretty neat. Wouldn't have minded a Shriekmaw or a Vivid land, but if I really want a card, I'd be better served buying it straight instead of hoping I crack one.

Not a bad night.

I built this deck today. It's based mostly off the Simic Mutology preconstructed deck, from Dissension. As I browsed through it, I got to thinking about the relations between the Graft mechanic and all the possibilities to monkey around with counters presented by Shadowmoor and, to a lesser extent, Shards of Alara. The idea is to get some Grafted creatures out and use Soul's Might to give them many tokens. From there, they can be Grafted further or Fate Transfered onto something hard to deal with, like a Slippery Bogle. It's more of a wacky deck than anything capable, but I think it's decent. My plan for this blog, at present, is to be a chronicle of my efforts in geeky spheres, mainly Magic: the Gathering and tabletop games. I don't know what will come of it, and I don't even expect readers other than my girlfriend, but I'll feel better for having something to express all these thoughts to.

I'm going to Friday Night Magic this week. The nicest / most local store is having booster drafts for all of October, so I'm planning on hitting a couple. There will be pictures up on here.
